One of our very first recipes, that we actually wanted to put on the blog since we started. For some reason we forgot it for a long time, even though before we had these at least once a week (not healthy, we know :-P). So the other day we realized that and made them again, here’s the recipe.
- 225g firm tofu
- 3 tbsp cornstarch
- ½ cup flour
- ½ cup unsweetened plant-based milk
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ¼ tsp smoked paprika
- A few drops of liquid smoke
- 1 cup breadcrumbs
- Oil for frying
Start by pressing the tofu for 30 minutes. To do that, simply wrap it in a towel and put something heavy like plates, a filled kettle, etc.
While you wait for your tofu, take a medium-sized mixing bowl and combine flour, salt, garlic powder and paprika. Add in the milk and liquid smoke and mix until you end up with a goo-like batter (you might need to add a tiny bit more milk).
Once the tofu is ready, chop into bite-sized cubes and throw them into a bowl. Throw in the cornstarch and stir until all the pieces are covered.
Now you want to take one of the tofu cubes and dip it first in the batter and then in the breadcrumbs. Do this again with the rest of the tofu.
Fill a pan with oil until it reaches 1 cm high. Turn on the heat to high and wait until the oil is completely warmed up. Throw in 4-6 nuggets at a time and fry on each side until they reach a nice golden-brown colour (30-50 seconds on each side).
Sprinkle with extra salt or seasoning and serve as is or with a dip of your choice!
