Vegan Alsatian “Tarte Flambée”

When I get homesick I don’t only get homesick about German food, but also about food from the Alsace, which is 30 minutes by car away from where I grew up in Germany. One of my all time favorites is something, most people out of Europe or even people that just never visited the Alsace don’t even know. I find it deserves more popularity! It is like a pizza, just with sour cream instead.

So here I was, in a country far away from home, desperate about how to even make the dough of this wonderful dainty. After some research, I found out that it is not even difficult to make everything on your own and it is SO delicious. So here it is, my vegan version of the not famous enough “Tarte Flambée”!




  • 250g flour
  • 125ml water
  • 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • salt to taste (I took around 1tsp)

“Sour Cream” 

  • 200 ml of rice cream (or any thick plant based cream)
  • juice of half a lemon
  • a pinch of nutmeg
  • salt and pepper to taste

Topping (this is optional and can be exchanged to many beautiful variants) 

  • Half a block of smoked tofu (around 100g)
  • 1 onion
  • vegan cheese (we use the wonderful recipe from



Mix all the ingredients for the dough in a food processor or per hand until you have a smooth dough. Take some more flour on your working space and roll out the dough as thin as possible. Use the borders that are not perfectly round to make a crust. Transfer on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.

For the sour cream, also just mix all the ingredients in a bowl. Then cut the smoked tofu and fry it a little bit in a pan, so it gets more crispy. Meanwhile cut the onions and grate the “cheese”.


Now you can put the sour cream on the dough, spread it generously, so that the dough is covered in it. Put smoked tofu and onions on top and sprinkle with vegan cheese. Bake for 15 mins until the crust is golden brown.
